October 29 Iran sets up new naval base near the GulfIran sets up new naval base near the Gulf
Tehran (AFP) Oct 28, 2008 Iran has opened a new naval base east of the Strait of Hormuz in a bid to boost its military control over the strategic Gulf waters, the country's navy chief was quoted as saying on Tuesday. "With the opening of this naval base a new line of defence has been created east of the Strait of Hormuz," Admiral Habibollah Sayyari was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency. "We can prevent the entry of any enemy naval units into the strategic Persian Gulf area if need be," he said, adding that the base was located in the port town of Jask on the Sea of Oman. "The army needed new bases on the Sea of Oman given the presence of forces from outside the region in the waters around Iran," he added. An estimated 40 percent of the world's oil passes through the narrow channel between Iran and Oman, and Tehran has warned in the past it could block the waterway if it comes under attack over its controversial nuclear programme. Iran frequently stages war games in the Gulf, showing off an array of home-produced weaponry including missiles which it says are capable of targeting vessels along the entire seaway. The United States and its regional ally Israel, which accuse Iran of seeking atomic weapons, have never ruled out a military option to thwart the Islamic republic's nuclear drive. Iran vehemently denies the allegation, insisting that its nuclear programme is strictly aimed at peaceful ends. Bush Eyes Diplomatic Relations With IranBush Eyes Diplomatic Relations With Iran
Washington (UPI) Oct 27, 2008 President George W. Bush is having one final stab at leaving the White House on a somewhat more positive note, hoping it will override his legacy of two unfinished wars and a financial crisis that risks taking Western economies into a generalized meltdown of the world's banking system. After sending out discreet feelers to the Syrians and the Israelis that he was interested in chaperoning a last-minute peace effort by having Israel return the Golan Heights to the Syrians in exchange for recognition of the State of Israel and a peace treaty from Damascus -- and not getting anywhere with his proposal -- the president is now turning his attention to Iran.
According to White House sources quoted in McClatchy Newspapers late
last week, the Bush administration plans to establish diplomatic
relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran before the president's term
expires next January. Several reports last week indicated that Bush
intends to open a U.S. interest section in the Iranian capital after
the Nov. 4 U.S. presidential elections. ![]() Several navies around the world currently use nuclear propulsion in at least some ships and submarines: The USA has had an all-nuclear submarine fleet for over 50 years, a policy that dates back to Adm. Hyman Rickover. Britain’s sale of its SSK Upholder Class to Canada (as the problem-plagued Victoria Class) has made them an all-nuclear submarine fleet as well. China, France and Russia all use naval nuclear propulsion within mixed submarine fleets, India is currently working to join this club via its SSN program, and Brazil may be about to launch a program of its own. On the surface, France’s problem-plagued aircraft carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle joins Russia’s Kirov Class cruisers. Across the ocean, America’s aircraft carriers will soon become an all-nuclear fleet with the retirement of the USS Kitty Hawk [CV 63], and FY 2008-09 spending legislation is pushing the US Navy to use nuclear power in its future CG (X) cruisers and new amphibious ship classes. October 13 BMD Focus: Russia may not sell Iran S-300sBMD Focus: Russia may not sell Iran S-300s
Washington (UPI) Oct 10, 2008 The good news for Israel is that its outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has won assurances from Russia that it isn't going to sell advanced anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems to Iran. The bad news is that Russia already has sold a lot of other dangerous things to Iran, and its position on the S-300 could change too. Also the assurance in question didn't actually mention the S-300 system that so alarms the Israelis. It didn't mention the Iskander-E missiles that Syria wants from the Kremlin either, for that matter. ====== ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A year after surviving Pakistan's devastating earthquake, Dubri Bandi's villagers still live in fear. The might of the 7.6-magnitude quake of Oct. 8, 2005, is evident across the Himalayan terrain in Pakistan's part of Kashmir. Towering over this isolated settlement, Dina mountain was cleaved in two. Most homes in Dubri Bandi collapsed in the tremor. But it was spared from the worst of the disaster: an enormous rockslide that swept rice paddies and houses away in nearby villages, entombing as many as 1,800 people. ====== October 5, 2008 -- Updated 0100 GMT (0900 HKT) Earthquake rattles Afghanistan(CNN) -- A 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook central Afghanistan early Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. sales to Iran, Syria: report
Moscow (AFP) Oct 6, 2008 Russia's arms-export monopoly on Monday denied Israeli claims that it plans to deliver S-300 surface-to-air missiles to Iran or Syria, the Interfax news agency reported. "We have no information of this kind," a spokesman for the state-owned firm, Rosoboronexport, said when asked about potential sales of the sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons to Tehran or Damascus. The denial came as outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was due to arrive in Russia for a two-day visit in which concerns over Iran are expected to top the Israeli agenda. His defence minister, Ehud Barak, on Sunday urged Russia not to upset the strategic balance in the Middle East with arms sales to Muslim countries. Israeli media say the Jewish state is concerned by the possible sale of S-300s to Tehran, which could use them to foil Israeli or US airstrikes against sites linked to Iran's alleged nuclear weapons programme. The S-300 missile, called the SA-10 in the West, has a range of 150 kilometres (90 miles) and is capable of striking a plane up to 30 kilometres (18 miles) high. October 06 IF YOU WANT STOP, ( P K K), (ALL QUIEDA), (HAZB ALLAH). FIRST STOP IRANIAN ISLAMIC GOVI!!!Turkish army accuses Iraqi Kurds of aiding rebels
Ankara (AFP) Oct 5, 2008 The Turkish military Sunday accused Iraqi Kurds of aiding separatist Turkish Kurdish rebels taking refuge in their autonomous region in neighbouring northern Iraq. "We have no support at all from the northern Iraqi administration (against the rebels). Let aside any support, they are providing (the rebels with) infrastructural capabilites such as hospitals and roads," General Hasan Igsiz, the army's deputy chief, told a press conference. He was speaking after 15 Turkish soldiers were killed Friday when a group of militants from the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) -- sneaking in from their long-time bases in northern Iraq -- attacked a border outpost under cover of heavy weapons fire from northern Iraq. The general also accused Iraqi Kurds of failing to prevent PKK militants from mixing with the local population, thus making it difficult for the Turkish army to target the rebels in a series of bombing raids it has carried out in northern Iraq since last October. "Members of the organisation are based very close to the local population in large parts of northern Iraq and they are exploiting this," he said. "The northern Iraqi administration makes no effort to prevent this." "Our expectation is that (the PKK) be ackowledged as a terrorist organisation there and that support for the rebels be eliminated," Igsiz said. Ankara has long accused the Iraqi Kurds of tolerating the PKK on their territory, where it says the militants easily obtain weapons and explosives for attacks on Turkish targets across the border. The Iraqi authorities have repeatedly pledged efforts to curb the PKK, but say that the group's hideouts are in mountainous regions to which access is difficult. Swords and Shields: Pasdaran missile plan
Washington (UPI) Sep 30, 2008 It is highly significant that Iran's missile program is under the control of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard -- Pasdaran -- the most loyal element of the regime, which combines internal secret police and external intelligence and shock troop functions. It is not controlled by civilians; not even by the regular military. Historical parallels to a national security organization involvement in missile production and space launches include the German use of slave labor, coordinated with Heinrich Himmler's SS. Incidentally, Himmler had an abiding interest in space travel and even space colonization. Lavrenti Beria, Stalin's omnipotent secret police chief, presided over the Soviet nuclear bomb program and an empire of technological research institutes, such as the one described in Alexander Solzhenitsyn's novel "The First Circle." Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced its forthcoming space launch, which may likely be disguising a new intermediate-range ballistic missile or an attempt to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile. |
